an ode to a fallen angel

<sub>they would ask me every day
to tell them what she was saying
and i would never answer
there was just too much to tell

there were nights i would be
locked inside that cage
with no way to get out
and no way to escape
and i feared that
i never would

then she would smile at me and sigh
“do not worry,” she’d say
“these places always seem different
but they essentially stay the same”

i’d look at her and ask
how could you possibly know?

she would hesitate for a moment
and then she’d smile at me again
she would take my head in her hands
caressing my face as she spoke

“because,” she’d start to say
as if that was the only word
finally she’d take another breath
and her eyes would catch mine
“i have been here too”</sub>
